There are lots of adverts and information about
“Paulownia” nowadays, though its propagation by seeds is not known to many,
which is why I’ve decided to share my experience concerning this subject.
Several years ago, while browsing “web space”
aimlessly or looking through, by that time interesting subjects, I found out,
well, came across the information about “ Paulownia”, what kind of a plant it
is, where from(China) and when (in 18-19 century, Zugdidi botanical garden,
laid about near Dadiani palace, as a decorative garden of Prince Residence) it appeared in Georgia, who
it was named after (historically the original name is “Pavlovnia”, named after
the daughter of Pavel the 1st Ana Pavlovna, while it’s called a
“dragon tree” in China and “kiri” in Japan) and that this plant has beautiful,
bug, blue flowers and has some unique features.
1. It is a fast growing plant (at the
age of 8-10 it’s possible to get 1m3 wood material from it).
2. “Paulownia” has a very beautiful,
fragrant, honey flower which blooms for several months, is nutritious and
useful in acquiring honey, what will help to develop local agriculture.
3. Different kinds of furniture,
musical instruments, and small size toys are made from “Paulownia” hardwood; it
is almost irreplaceable in aircraft and shipbuilding because of its firmness
and lightness.
4. Timber is actively used for facing
houses, cottages (there is no better timber material for facing attic ceiling,
as different kinds of timber used for the same reason leak so called “pitch”).
In Georgia, specifically in western part
(it’s called “flat leaf” or “cotton tree”) there is already some kind of using
its timber for this reason.
For example the door –the frames and sides of which are made of a more
solid timber (chestnut tree), while the massive inner parts are made of
“Paulownia” timber, they are so matched that it is almost impossible to tell
them apart, but gives lightness to the doors. Its weight comparing to the
weight of the oak tree of the same volume, is five times lighter.
5. “Paulownia” has quite large leaves,
so after planting it you can get some shade in your yard; in addition the
leaves of this plant, in which there is high protein composition, are silage
material in cattle-breeding.
6. Within a short period of growth of
young plants of “Paulownia” micro-macro ecological efficiency is achieved on
the adjacent territory, which is expressed in the growth of harvesting of
agricultural cultures. That is why it is preferable to other kinds of woods.
7. Because of a quick growth of
“Paulownia” and the accumulation of a relatively big amount of wood in a short
period of time its production in the world is getting bigger and bigger day by
day, it enables to save precious and rare plants from the red book and totally
satisfy the need of wood by artificially cultivated young plants of “Paulownia”
(for commercial purposes).
8. There are many other things and
because of all these “Paulownia” is called the tree of future.
The above mentioned advertisement interested me
so much that I started gathering and systemization of all the information about
“Paulownia”. On the contrary to nowadays there was no information about this
subject on Georgian web sites or because its shortage it was almost impossible
to have an adequate impression on this matter. Thus I mostly used information
available on English language or Russian web sites.
And I decided to try out, I contacted the
author of the advertisement and met him. It turned out that for the
popularization of “Paulownia” you could get 500-800 paulownia seeds while
buying the so called bulletin (magazine), which made me decide to buy the above
mentioned magazine. And here started the alteration of success and failure of
my so called work. To be continued.
